QWAQWA – An assault suspect who had been on the run for months after escaping from lawful custody has been re-arrested.

Lebajwa Matsuma, who was initially arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), escaped in November last year while under police guard at Elizabeth Ross Hospital.

However, his brief taste of freedom came to an end on Wednesday, 9 July, when he was spotted in Mphatlalatsane village.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring confirmed the re-arrest and credited the community for assisting law enforcement officials.

“Our social crime prevention unit, with the assistance of the community, arrested the wanted suspect at Mphatlalatsane village while conducting the weekly crime awareness campaign,” said Mophiring.

He further stated that Matsuma is expected to appear in court soon, now also facing charges of escaping from lawful custody.
