QWAQWA – The Free State MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Ketso Makume, was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday, 19 April 2026, the provincial department has confirmed.
According to a media statement issued on Monday, the accident occurred on the N5 between Paul Roux and Senekal when a wild animal suddenly crossed the road. The driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid a collision.
The department said Makume and his two protectors escaped the crash without sustaining any serious injuries.
“We are relieved to report that the MEC and both his protectors escaped without sustaining any serious injuries,” the statement confirmed.
The department has appealed for privacy for the MEC and those involved as they recover from the incident.
“We respectfully request that the MEC, his protectors, and their families be afforded the necessary space and privacy to recover, and to enable them to resume their duties at the earliest opportunity,” the statement added.
No further details about the condition of the vehicle or any additional damages have been released. The department did not indicate whether any investigations into the incident are underway.
The incident comes amid ongoing road safety concerns on the N5, a route known for frequent wildlife crossings and accidents.
