Driver dies in fiery collision near Kestell

KESTELL – A driver was burned beyond recognition after the bakkie he was driving collided with a truck on the N5 outside Kestell, on Monday afternoon March 31.

According to SAPS Thabo Mofutsanyana spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, the tragic accident occurred when the bakkie, traveling from Harrismith towards Bethlehem, crashed into the truck.

Upon impact, the bakkie caught fire, leaving the driver fatally injured at the scene. The truck driver sustained only minor injuries.

Authorities confirmed that the deceased was known to his employer, as the vehicle was being used for goods deliveries. A case of culpable homicide has been opened and is under investigation.

Police urge motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent further tragedies on the province’s highways. The debris from the accident is being cleared therefore motorists heading to Bethlehem are advised to be careful on this road.
