QWAQWA – Female members of the Qwaqwa Scholar Transport Association (Qwasta) were treated to a surprise Women’s Day celebration that was disguised as a usual Annual General Meeting (AGM) in their invitations, by their male colleagues.

Lydia Leshota, a member of Qwasta, expressed her surprise when she arrived for an AGM meeting only to find music playing in the background and her colleagues dancing and celebrating.
“We were invited for the AGM on Thursday 15 August, when we arrived at the venue, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There was music playing in the background and my colleagues were dancing.

“One of my colleagues called me to the side and said our male colleagues had bought cake and snacks to celebrate us as part of Women’s Day. I had never seen such a big cake that was enough to be shared among all the women of the association because there are many of us.
“It was so heartwarming to see that the men of Qwasta know how important women are, that it is not only the women in their lives that are important but also the women that they work with.

“It was such a wonderful and fun filled day. I was very surprised to see that men also realise and know how important women are. I was very surprised and thankful,” Leshota said in an interview.
Lettie Motaung shared the same sentiments:
“As women of Qwasta we were treated to a surprise celebration, and we couldn’t believe that the men would do such a thing because we were just attending a usual AGM meeting. I felt like one of the women of 1956 who marched to the union buildings to fight for their rights. As Qwasta women we find ourselves blessed with very important men who celebrated us and showed us that they are what they are because of us and reminded us that a family is not complete without a woman. The men of Qwasta really made us proud and motivated us to really remember our role as women. Even in the beginning when God created Adam, he saw it fit to make him a helper who was a woman.”

On behalf of the male members of Qwasta, Mosebetsi Mothokoa said they thought it would be a good idea to organise themselves as men and celebrate the women who hold the knife by the blade and work hard by their side at Qwasta.

“Our message to the women that work with us is that they are always motivating and encouraging us as men, and everything runs smoothly in the association because of their efforts. The good book says a wise woman builds her house and the one who lacks understanding destroys it with her own hands.
“We see that the women who work with us are wise because they work tirelessly to build their households to generate income through the safe transport of our children to and from school in our community.

“I pray that God gives the women of Qwasta more strength to build the association from strength to strength,” Mothokoa said.
