QWAQWA-The newly elected executive mayor of Thabo Mofutsanyana district municipality Conny Msibi of ANC has called for cooperation of all councillors to accelerate service delivery.

“Campaigning is over. Now it is time to work towards our common purpose of serving the community of Thabo Mofutsanyana.”

Thabo Mofutsanyana district municipality consists of six local municipalities, namely Phumelela, Setsoto, Mantsopa,Dihlabeng ,Nketoana, and Maluti-a-Phofung. It is constituted of  32 councillors  picked from  six local municipalities.

During the  election of the mayor, Msibi  became triumphed over Map16 ‘s Azael Nhlapo with 18 votes to 11. Three councillors abstained and there were No spoiled ballot.

The ANC’s Thabo Mokoena was elected speaker with 18 votes against the Da’s Jafta Mokoena‘s 14 votes.

However, the opposition vowed to challenge the legality of ANC Thabo Mokoena. They claim proper procedure was not followed that ended up with his name appearing on position four contrary to a list provided by Independent Electoral Commission.

But municipal manager Takatso Lebenya who was chairing the inaugural sitting of the council explained to the councillor that, Mokoena‘s nomination is in line with the law.

“He jumped to number four from number five  after Mohlakoana, who was number four resigned. I have the letter from IEC allowing for such processes to unfold.”

The former mayor of Dihlabeng local municipality was elected as council chief whip after gaining 18 votes against DA’s Lilian Mohanoe 14.

Election for other  positios such as that  of chairperson of public accounts committee , mayoral committee positions as well  as chairs of committees were postponed to the next council sitting .

Thabo Mofutsanyana council sitting came after two postponements.

Before the swearing in of all 32 councillors, Magistrate Jenifer Moalusi reminded them of the  importance of living up to the oath, they were  about to take and to serve the purpose of delivering service to the people .

“You must uphold to the constitution and laws of South Africa. You are the leaders of the society.”
