QWAQWA – Angry Ward 13 residents have issued the ANC a stark warning: Change your candidate now, or “kiss this ward goodbye” in the upcoming local government elections.
The community is demanding the ANC in Maluti-a-Phofung and the Free State replace the current candidate with sitting councillor Malemoha Mokunuhi, saying they were never consulted.
Residents say they were shocked to see an unknown name and ID number on the ANC’s candidate list.
“The ANC came to us and said their party guidelines want us as the community to choose whom we want. But we did that, so they must respect that,” said resident Angelina Mofokeng.
The community claims they submitted Mokunuhi’s name after the ANC asked them to nominate their preferred candidate.
“We are not telling the ANC who to select. We are fighting for a promise broken by the party,” Mofokeng said.
Residents say they have already sent a memorandum to ANC structures from branch level up to the office of Kgalema Motlanthe.
Residents credit Mokunuhi for his hands-on leadership.
“We nominated Mokunuhi because of his dedication and hard-working character. He lives among us and always fights for the community, not for himself,” said Melita Moloi.
“He never failed us. We know him. We want only him. But if the ANC is willing to lose this ward, it must continue with that candidate we do not know,” Moloi added.
The community has given the ANC until Wednesday, 16 September to correct the candidate list. They say failure to act will force them to decide on further action ahead of the elections.
The ANC in the Free State is yet to respond.
