QWAQWA-Maluti TVET College joined the rest of the world in celebration of the 10th year remembrance of Nelson Mandela under the theme “it’s in your hands” at Jehovah Jireh Children’s home to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.

According to Maluti TVET college spokesperson Makhala Labase the college decided to develop a garden with the aim of producing food and instilling culture of entrepreneurship through its Agriculture campus while also abiding with climate change.

“We developed the garden to eventually produce food that will be used towards their everyday meal, and it will also benefit them in having an integrated skills about agriculture and entrepreneurship. Planting will not only improve their skills but will also build a source of purpose and invest in sustainable food production.”

She said the initiative aims to help to make impact of climate change and contribute to stabilizing and enriching the soil at the orphanage home to help food gardens flourish.

“We also cooked lunch for them and had activities with them, in additional we also gave out sanitary packages. This day gives us an opportunity as citizens to recognise our individual power to change the world for the better and tackle the intersection between climate change and food security.”

Mandela day is annual global celebration that takes place on the 18 July to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. This day is a call to action for individual, communities, and organisations to take time to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities.

The call to action for Nelson Mandela International day 2023 was “Climate, Food & Solidarity” and reflect some of most urgent challenges facing people worldwide. This year we focused on poverty and inequality by talking action against climate change and creating resilient food environment.
