QWA QWA – A few weeks after education MEC Tate Makgoe relaunched the provincial school sports leagues in Intabazwe, Kgola Thuto Secondary School has introduced rugby in its public school sporting codes.

The idea was brought to light by school principal, Bongani Mokoena, and the sports committee  after noticing the learners’ keen interest in the sport. The school currently has about five sporting codes: choral music, soccer for both ladies and gents, netball and drama.

The spokesperson of the school’s sports committee, Nhlanhla Mazibuko, said the school is excited to get the kids on the field to enjoy the game.

“Our main objective was to introduce some elements of this sport to the kids We are regarded as one of the biggest schools in QwaQwa and with our high roll of learners from different areas, we then decided to afford learners who might be interested in the game to come and showcase their talents. Coach Eightelhare is teaching them the basics, like pass, tackle, running and how to work within a team environment while having fun at the same time,” said Mazibuko.

Speaking of the newly introduced sport in the school, Coach and former Uniqwa Rugby club hooker, Davert Eightelhare said, the aim is to make a huge difference more, especially in public schools, by developing professional rugby players, and improving learners’ confidence when facing their white counterparts.

“We all know the rugby has always been regarded as a white only sport, but that has long changed through the transformation policies in our country sporting codes. Will also assist the learners with awesome opportunities to develop them physically and socially,” said Eightelhare.

He said they are going to ensure that rugby is accessible to more kids, while at the same time ensuring that the school is in line with the necessary standards of professional sporting codes across Thabo Mofutsanyana district.
