QWAQWA – The troubled and fiercely contested Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality has confirmed that the cellphones of Acting Mayor Masetjhaba Lakaje Mosia and Municipal Manager Adv. Mofokeng were hacked amid rising political tensions ahead of the local government elections.
Mosia, who is acting in the absence of Executive Mayor Tumelo Thebe during his official trip to China, reportedly fell victim to the cyberattack just days after assuming the position.
Municipal spokesperson Thabo Kessah warned residents not to respond to suspicious messages, money requests or unfamiliar links allegedly sent from the phones of the acting mayor or municipal manager.
Kessah urged the public to remain vigilant as the municipality investigates the matter.
The latest incident follows a similar hacking case involving former Executive Mayor Gilbert Mokotso’s cellphone late last year.
No arrests have been made.
