BETHLEHEM — A three-year old girl is dead and her young mother is behind bars after a horror strangling inside a backroom shack in Voggelfontein.
Police say the child was allegedly strangled on Tuesday night, 6 October 2026, at her mother’s residence in Voggelfontein near Bethlehem.
Thabo Mofutsanyana District SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring confirmed the incident.
“It is alleged that the incident occurred last night inside a backroom shack at the suspect’s residence in Voggelfontein near Bethlehem, where the child was allegedly strangled,” said Mophiring.
Officers were summoned to the scene and arrested the 21-year old mother.
“She was subsequently taken for further medical treatment and evaluation,” Mophiring said.
The mother is expected to appear before the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder.
Police say the motive for the killing is still unknown.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation,” Mophiring said.Investigations continue.
