QWAQWA – A 24-year-old man from Makgolokweng Village has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 52-year-old father, Thomas Amos Mokoena, who died in hospital after allegedly being scalded with boiling water during an argument at their home last month.

According to Thabo Mofutsanyana District SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, when the father and son allegedly had an argument at their home.

During the altercation, the 24-year-old suspect allegedly poured boiling water over his father’s upper and lower body, leaving him with severe burns.

Mokoena was initially taken to a local hospital in Harrismith for treatment before being transferred to a hospital in Phuthaditjhaba for further medical care. He remained hospitalised for approximately 15 days.

On Wednesday, 14 October, hospital authorities informed police of Mokoena’s death in the presence of his wife. A murder case was subsequently opened, prompting an investigation by the Harrismith Detective Service.

The investigation led to the arrest of the deceased’s son, who is now facing an allegation of murder.

The accused is expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The accused remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
