QWAQWA – He says voices told him to jump.Thabo Sediadia (23) from Bolata village cheated death on Saturday, 17 October, after throwing himself off the Namahadi River bridge near Lancaster into the river below.
Stunned onlookers watched in horror as the young man plunged into the water in what appeared to be a suicide attempt and frantically called police.
Free State police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said rescue teams were immediately activated.
“They found the young man motionless in the river. They managed to bring him safe to the riverbank, where it was discovered that he was unable to move. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to a local hospital,” Mophiring said.
When he regained consciousness, he gave his name as Thabo Sediadia and told rescuers:
“He heard voices before jumping off the bridge.”
The dramatic rescue involved Phuthaditjhaba police rescue and diving unit, tactical response team members, off-duty officers and the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality fire and rescue service.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia hailed the swift action.
The rescue comes as South Africa marks Mental Health Awareness Month.
“As we observe mental health awareness month, I urge parents, families and relatives to look after one another, particularly those who may be experiencing emotional or psychological distress. Life presents challenges, but we must stand together, show compassion and support those who may be going through difficult times,” Lesia said.
Lesia also warned parents to be vigilant as children flock to rivers to cool off in the scorching heat, after recent drownings.
