QWAQWA – The Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality has urged residents to pay for basic services, warning that rights cannot be sustained without public cooperation.
The municipality says while access to water, electricity, sanitation, housing, education and healthcare is guaranteed, service delivery depends on residents meeting their obligations.
Municipal spokesperson Thabo Kessah said the municipality remains committed to providing services despite ongoing challenges.
“Overcoming these challenges requires all of us to play a meaningful role by paying for what we consume,” he said.
Kessah acknowledged persistent water supply problems in some areas, blaming ageing infrastructure, but noted significant improvements in electricity provision.
“Power supply has improved tremendously, although some areas still face outages due to network overloading and vandalism,” he said.
The municipality said it continues to engage communities through public participation programmes to reinforce the link between rights and responsibilities.
The call comes as the country marked Human Rights Day on March 21.
