Man arrested with R3.2 million Khat drug

BETHLEHEM – Free State police have confirmed the arrest of a 46-year-old foreign national found in possession of drugs on the R26 road just outside Bohlokong township on Thursday, 17 July.

According to the police, the arrest followed a tip-off about a person suspected to be in possession of drugs.Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, said officers were able to identify both the suspect and the vehicle involved.

“The vehicle was intercepted by the Bethlehem K9 Unit on the R26 outside Bohlokong. The driver attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered plastic bags containing a suspected khat drug weighing 10 kilograms,” Mophiring said.

He added that the drugs have an estimated street value of R3.2 million and that the suspect was also found in possession of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 July, facing a charge of dealing in drugs.Both the drugs and the vehicle have been seized by police.
