Free State DSACR mourns actress Connie Chiume

BLOEMFONTEIN – Free State Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Ntombizanele Sifuba, extended her heartfelt condolences to the family of Mme Connie Chiume and the creative sector on the passing of this cultural stalwart and legend.


Chiume passed on at the age of 72 years on the 6th of August 2024. This late stalwart and legend in the performing arts industry hailed from Welkom in the Free State.
Joining mourners in passing condolences Sifuba said.


“We celebrate the prominent role Mme Connie Chiume played in many illustrious productions like Gomora, the Black Panther, Yizo Yizo 2, Zone 14 and Rhythm City. And the fact that she was the recipient of several South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA’s) as well as the Feather Award nomination in recognition of her role in supporting the LGBTIQ+ community. These are special attributes we should all remember this creative for.

South African actress Connie Chiume has passed away at age 72.


“We offer our condolences to her immediate family, friends, creative sector, fans and followers in the country and beyond. We have lost an icon and legendary actress, may her legacy continue to live on through her contribution in the film, television and performing arts sectors.”


According to the Free State DSACR the director of communication and IT Tankiso Zola in Chiume’s illustrious history, it will always be remembered that she was a legend and master in her craft, a trailblazer and a pioneer for all women in performing arts. She paved a way for the younger generation of women in the industry and demonstrated dedication, discipline and passion in her craft.
