QWAQWA – Axed Maluti-a-Phofung municipality executive mayor and leader of opposition party MAP16, Gilbert Mokotso, has become the latest victim of impersonation.

Mokotso recently learned from residents that he was allegedly in desperate need of money for personal matters — claims he knew nothing about.

It has since come to light that an unknown scammer has been impersonating Mokotso on WhatsApp, using his name to solicit money.

“I’ve received numerous calls from concerned individuals informing me that someone is impersonating me and asking for money using my contact information. I’m unaware of how the scammers obtained my number, and I want to clarify that I have never requested money from anyone,” said Mokotso.

Taking to social media, Mokotso warned residents that an impersonator was using his name to scam people.

He confirmed being alerted to the issue when many individuals received suspicious messages during the Soweto Derby weekend.

“It’s unfortunate if people fell victim to this heartless scammer using my name. It was surprising because my phone was with me the entire time,” he added.

Paratlane Motloung and Thabiso Rakgatla, who were politically deployed during Mokotso’s term at Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, also received the suspicious messages and almost fell for the scam.

“I suspected it was a scam due to Mokotso’s character, but the message almost convinced me he might be in trouble. However, upon closer inspection, the writing style didn’t match his. I became curious and decided to play along by promising to send money. When I called the same number, it went straight to voicemail,” said Rakgatla.

Mokotso cautioned residents to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to scams.

Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring confirmed that a cyber-related case was registered at the Phuthaditjhaba Police Station on Sunday, 11 May.

“We can confirm that a cyber-related case is under investigation,” he said.
