QWAQWA – The Phuthaditjhaba police have once again brought joy to the community – this time, not by responding to a crime, but by celebrating a remarkable milestone: the 105th birthday of an elderly citizen in style.

Mankuku Mofokeng, from Bluegumbosch in QwaQwa, was treated to a surprise birthday celebration by the local men and women in blue on Thursday, April 3 2025.

Mofokeng, who lives with her 70-year old daughter, Mamonuwa Mofokeng, was identified through a police initiative aimed at profiling and supporting senior citizens within their jurisdiction.

Constable Nontokozo Ncamane discovered Mofokeng while conducting door-to-door visits as part of an ongoing effort to improve police visibility and safeguard vulnerable seniors from crime. Upon learning about the upcoming milestone birthday, Constable Ncamane took the lead in organizing a heartwarming celebration.

Phuthaditjhaba Station Commander, Colonel Mambidi Nkgatho, said the elderly profiling program is vital because senior citizens are often targeted in crimes, including rape and gender-based violence.

“We’re celebrating Gogo’s special day because we care deeply about our elderly community. They are vulnerable and often fall victim to crime, which is why they are a priority for us. Our program focuses on identifying and supporting our grannies — visiting them, engaging with them, and giving back in any way we can,” said Colonel Nkgatho.

The birthday celebration was filled with joy: lively music, warm conversations, thoughtful gifts, and, of course, a beautiful birthday cake. The highlight of the day was a brand-new warm gown gifted to Mofokeng — the cherry on top of an unforgettable celebration.

“To live a long life, you must show respect to your parents and eat healthy food,” said Mofokeng. “I’m grateful to have reached this milestone and so happy to be part of the SAPS celebration.”

Her daughter, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed deep gratitude to the police for making her mother’s special day truly memorable.
