MANGAUNG PROTEST ENDS IN TRAGEDY

BLOEMFONTEIN-A 15-year-old boy has been shot dead, allegedly by a security guard who  fired a shot to scare the mob trying to forceful enter into a warehouse as the shutdown protests in Mangaung turned ugly on Monday.

Jevano Liam Siegel, a grade 7 learner at Heide primary school, lost his life on Monday during the protest in Mangaung.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Sam Makhele, a security guard, aged 57, has been arrested over the shooting and he is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court soon on a charge of murder.

This after  a group of protestors allegedly tried to attack a warehouse in Dr Belcher Road in Bloemfontein on Monday  morning when  the security guard at the place tried to stop them from gaining entry.

“The security guard, who was alone at the time, fired a shot in a quest to scare the mob, unfortunately hit a 15-year-old boy,” Free State police spokesperson Sam Makhele said in a statement.

The teenager was declared dead at the scene.

“The security guard was arrested and he will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on a charge of murder,” Makhele said.

Meanwhile Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Siegel.
