REITZ — Nketoana Local Municipality is planting more than trees — it is planting a future. The municipality joined the Presidential 10 Million Trees Programme in September, rolling out the national greening campaign to five schools across Mamafubedu and Petsana.
Learners at Thebe Secondary, Lehlomela Secondary, Mamafubedu Secondary, Petsana Secondary and Leifo-Iziko Secondary put their hands in the soil as part of the initiative led by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).
The drive goes beyond planting. It is about awareness, responsibility, and getting communities to nurture and protect trees long after planting day.
The message is simple and powerful: “One Tree. One Learner. One Future.”
The programme forms part of national efforts to restore green spaces, create healthier communities, and push young people to take charge of environmental sustainability.
Nketoana’s participation highlights the critical role of schools and communities in conservation — with learners leading the fight for a greener, more sustainable South Africa.
The Presidential 10 Million Trees Programme is a national initiative bringing together government, municipalities, schools and communities to expand the country’s tree cover and secure a greener future.
