HARRISMITH – The Free State Department of Education has launched an internal investigation following the arrest of a teacher from Pulamadiboho Primary School in Intabazwe over allegations of corporal punishment involving a Grade 3 learner.

The teacher was arrested on Wednesday, 13 May, after the alleged incident reportedly took place earlier this week on Monday, 12 May.

Department spokesperson Howard Ndaba confirmed the arrest and said the department strongly condemns all forms of violence against learners, including corporal punishment, which remains illegal in South African schools.

“The department acknowledges the arrest and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring safe and nurturing learning environments for every child,” said Ndaba.

He said the department is investigating the matter to determine the appropriate course of action, including possible disciplinary steps in line with departmental policies and the Employment of Educators Act.

Ndaba added that psychosocial support has been arranged for the learner to help address possible trauma resulting from the incident.

He also urged community members to remain calm and allow the legal process to unfold.

“The teacher is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law,” he said.

The department further appealed to the public not to circulate videos showing the teacher being escorted by police, warning that such material could prejudice the legal process and inflame tensions within the community.

The department said it would not comment further while investigations and court processes are underway.

It is not yet clear when the teacher is expected to appear in court.
