QWAQWA – What should have been a policing success has turned into a major embarrassment for Free State police after a burglary suspect escaped from lawful custody in Heilbron.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 10 April 2026, shortly after officers transported the suspect to the Heilbron Police Station following his arrest.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani confirmed that the suspect, believed to be a Mozambican national, had been apprehended in connection with a burglary at a local farm.
“Upon arrival at the station at approximately 03:00, the suspect managed to escape from custody and fled on foot into nearby bushes,” said Rani.
A search operation was immediately launched, but the suspect remains at large.
Police have since appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts, or who may have noticed suspicious activity in the area, to come forward.
Members of the community have been warned not to approach the suspect, as he may be dangerous.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Constable Pirimine Mofokeng on 064 841 5156, or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
