QWAQWA — The Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court has postponed a Schedule 6 murder case involving five accused to 19 February 2026, after a bail application on Thursday, 12 February.

Malefetsane Mokoena, Oupa Mofokeng, Mahlape Mokoena, Kgalemang Masaballa and Lomile Hlolloane face murder and conspiracy to commit murder, with the State indicating that additional charges may follow.

The court heard that Mokoena, alleged to be the mastermind, intends to plead guilty, while three co-accused plan to turn state witnesses. Affidavits submitted by all accused were admitted as exhibits.

The accused are linked to the killing of Celumuzi Hlatswayo (20), whose burnt, decomposed body was found in a donga on a farm along the Clarens route, six days after he was reported missing.

According to evidence, Hlatswayo was lured to a house in Matsikeng by his girlfriend on false pretences. The State alleges she acted on instructions from Mokoena.

The State opposed bail, arguing the case is strong and release would not be in the interests of justice.

Investigating officer Det. Const. Mapitori Matale told the court that Mokoena had confessed and was the mastermind. She added that preliminary investigations show two co-accused were instructed to abduct the victim, a claim they partially deny.

Matale also disputed Mokoena’s affidavit, saying he has prior convictions for assault and theft.

All accused remain in custody. The matter resumes on 19 February 2026.
