QWAQWA β€” Two pedestrians lost their lives after they were allegedly struck by a vehicle near the University of the Free State (UFS) Qwaqwa campus on the evening of 3 February 2026.

Police have opened a culpable homicide case following the fatal crash.

Thabo Mofutsanyana District SAPS spokesperson Mmako Mophiring confirmed that the driver was taken into custody at the scene.

β€œIt is a case of culpable homicide. Apparently the driver hit two pedestrians, a male and a female, who unfortunately died on the scene. He was arrested because he was driving under the influence of liquor,” said Mophiring.

Emergency services responded shortly after the incident, but both victims were declared dead on arrival.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending notification of their families.

Police investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges related to drunk driving and culpable homicide.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity such as around the university precinct.
