BLOEMFONNTEIN– A 30-year old taxi driver from the JOSELDA taxi association is recovering in hospital after gunmen opened fire on his minibus at Majakathata rank on Thursday night.

The vehicle was struck 29 times in what police are investigating as attempted murder.

The attack occurred at about 21:15 as the driver and his crew were turning into Short Street after buying food. According to Thabo Covane, unknown assailants fired a hail of bullets from across the street.

“The driver continued driving despite the attack and managed to reach Parkweg Police Station in a minibus riddled with 29 bullet holes,” Covane said.

Preliminary investigations indicate the taxi had travelled from Gauteng earlier that day, safely dropping off 21 passengers before the shooting.

Crime scene experts recovered 11 spent cartridges from R4 and R5 assault rifles.

The South African Police Service has appealed for information. Witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the attack can contact Captain Sabata Jafta Moseme on 082 526 2713, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit tips via the MySAPS app.
