BLOEMFONTEIN – A 34-year old farm worker from the Kloofeind area outside Bloemfontein has been arrested on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice after the remains of his 27-year old girlfriend were found buried in a shallow grave along the N8 between Bloemfontein and Petrusburg on Monday.
Free State police said the suspect had earlier reported the woman missing in January, allegedly providing a false statement at Parkweg police station that she had left the farm to visit an aunt in the Bloemspruit area.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Thabo Covane said an intelligence-driven operation led to the discovery of the grave.
“The shallow grave was pointed out by the 34-year old suspect. The remains of the victim, identified as his girlfriend, were exhumed on Monday,” Covane said.
Crime scene experts processed the area from early Monday morning. The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
