QWAQWA – The Tebang Sports Ground pulsed with energy and emotion this past weekend as community members gathered to honour the late Thabiso Gamede through a vibrant sports tournament hosted by the Thabiso Gamede Foundation.

The event brought together soccer and netball enthusiasts, celebrating not only athletic talent but also the enduring legacy of a man many hailed as a local hero.

On the sidelines, Sekhukhune United assistant coach and former soccer star Paulous Masehe encouraged young people to remain committed to their goals.

“Our youth have immense talent, but they need support and platforms like this to develop it. Thabiso believed in uplifting others — we must carry that spirit forward,” said Masehe.

A particularly emotional moment came from local businessman Mohapi Makume, a close friend of Gamede, who was moved to tears while reflecting on his late friend’s legacy.

“He was a good man who loved his community. If he could see all these young people being supported today, he’d be proud. Thabiso was a true hero who inspired many of us.”

In the netball tournament, Jumbos Netball Team clinched the championship title. Their coach, Mohokare Ditaba, accepted the trophy with pride, dedicating the victory to Gamede’s memory and thanking the organizers for their efforts.

Representing the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, MMC for Local Economic Development Masechaba Lakaje-Mosia delivered a heartfelt tribute.

“Thabiso was a son of Ward 35, and clearly, he was loved. The fact that so many people came together to honour him through this tournament speaks volumes about the kind of person he was.”

She also commended Tshepiso Senyane, Chairperson of the Thabiso Gamede Foundation, for leading the initiative.“We must officially launch this foundation one day so it can continue to inspire the youth of Ward 35 and the entire Maluti-a-Phofung community,” she added.

In the soccer competition, Maluti Bus Service emerged victorious, claiming the championship trophy. Ex-QwaQwa Presenters secured second place, while Tebang Masters finished a commendable third.

The Thabiso Gamede Foundation Sports Tournament was more than just a series of games — it was a powerful tribute to a man who championed unity, youth development, and the transformative power of sport. As the sun set over Tebang Sports Ground, one message echoed loud and clear: Thabiso Gamede’s legacy lives on — in every goal, every cheer, and every life he touched.
