Free State – Family members, friends, footballers, and fans bid a final farewell to former Free State Stars and Mpumalanga Black Aces player Roger Makume (43) on Saturday, 24 May, following the unexpected announcement of his passing.

The sports fraternity was informed that Makume succumbed to a short illness after being admitted to Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital on Thursday, 15 May.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns player Papi Mbhele described Roger as a talented coach who deserved a place in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.

“I’m still trying to come to terms with Roger’s passing. We spoke just last week about organizing a December tournament. His sudden death has left me shocked and devastated,” said Mbhele.

“His dream was to lead his team from the lower leagues to the PSL. His untimely passing has truly broken our hearts.”

Family spokesperson Busisiwe Lekitlane described his death as mysterious and said it had left the family in shock.

“Our hearts are heavy with grief. We remember Roger as a kind soul who always put others first. His generosity and support meant the world to us. We were still expecting so much from him,” she said.

Soccer fan and Free State Stars supporter Vusi Xaba praised Makume as a local football legend and community leader.

“Roger was a true leader in our community. His passion for football inspired many young players in Heilbron and QwaQwa, where he lived. It’s heartbreaking to lose someone so full of life and potential,” said Xaba.

Makume’s farewell ceremony was held in his hometown of Heilbron.
