QWAQWA – Maluti-a-phofung local municipality’s executive mayor Malekula Melato has hailed visit of Chinese Consul General to the area a step in the right direction that will enable them to experience the potential the area has to offer at first hand.

Melato said this during a first day of Chinese Consul delegation visit in Map on May 20,2025.

“Presentations are good, but seeing is better because it gives a clearer picture of what we have to offer. The consulate must have a feel of what is available here, ” she said.

For his part Consul General Pan Qingjiang expressed his admiration for the beauty and potential of the region.

“The mayor has shown a strong commitment to pushing Maluti-a-Phofung forward, and I am willing to work with her and her team. If I was a businessperson, I would think about investing in the SEZ. It is located in a beautiful area. I will do my part to promote this SEZ to my Chinese business community.”

He further emphasized the importance of bilateral relations and encouraged ongoing dialogue and collaboration.

“We believe in mutual development. The economic zone and other developmental areas here are impressive. There is much potential, and I’m confident that Chinese investors will find value here,” Qinjiang said.

Municipal Manager Motsoahae Mzwakhe Mofokeng extended his gratitude to the Consul General and his delegation for their visit.

“Thank you very much, Consul General, and your team for giving yourselves time to visit us here in Maluti-a-Phofung. Bring business people from China to develop the youth. With this team, I believe that we will be able to make things happen. We need to consolidate what we have agreed upon so that it benefits the youth and the people of Maluti-a-Phofung. Anything is possible only if you believe.”

On 20 May, 2025, the visit included a comprehensive tour of the Fika Patso and Sterkfontein dams, key developmental sites such as local factories, the MAP Special Economic Zone (SEZ). It also featured engagements with the various stakeholders, and traditional leaders of the region.
