BOTSHABELO – The management of Botshabelo-based soccer club D’General FC has officially shut down operations and is putting the team up for sale, ending the journey of one of the Free State’s most promising teams that once had hopes of reaching the top tier league.

Affectionately known as “Maberete” by fans, D’General FC was co-founded and owned by popular SABC Lesedi FM radio personality Nyakallo “Ba2cada” Leine and Kamohelo Mokotjo.Established six years ago, the team competed in the Free State ABC Motsepe League for six consecutive seasons. However, in a statement released on Monday, May 19, the club confirmed that financial difficulties had forced them to sell their league status.

“Despite our passion and commitment, the financial demands of sustaining the team without sponsorship have become insurmountable, leading us to this moment,” said Leine. He added that the decision was not made lightly:

“It’s a deeply considered step after much reflection. When we started this journey, our goal was to compete in this league for five years.”

Sports commentator Lerato Lefu described the decision as another blow to sports development in the Free State.“This is a major setback. People must understand that passion alone isn’t enough to run a football club,” Lefu said.

“Sponsorship is vital. There are many background expenses that need daily funding. It’s unfortunate that D’General has been left with no option but to sell, especially considering the long, troubled history of soccer teams in the province.”

Leine expressed heartfelt gratitude to the supporters who kept them going through the years. “In these six years, we achieved extraordinary milestones—we won our stream twice, finished second three times, and reached two provincial playoffs. We proudly became provincial Nedbank champions and reached the last 16 of the tournament. These accomplishments are a testament to the heart and dedication of everyone involved.”

The team concluded its statement by thanking all its loyal supporters for their unwavering dedication.
