FICKSBURG – The community of Meqheleng in Ficksburg, Free State, has been left reeling in shock and anger following the alleged rape of a 40-year old man – an incident that has sparked concerns over safety and justice.

According to police reports, the alleged incident took place on Wednesday, 16 April, when the victim was drinking with friends at a local residence, including the accused, identified as Phiri Motaung.

Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring stated that during the gathering, Motaung allegedly approached the victim and told him he wanted him to be his wife. When the victim rejected the proposition, Motaung reportedly became aggressive—grabbing the victim by his clothes, headbutting him, kissing him, and threatening to stab him if he told anyone.

The suspect then allegedly forced the victim to walk with him to a nearby shack, where the rape is said to have occurred. The victim later reported the incident to friends and the police. He was taken to a local hospital for medical examination.

The accused was arrested and has been charged with kidnapping and rape. He appeared briefly in the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 April. The case has been postponed to 6 May for a formal bail application.

Community members have expressed outrage over the incident. Ishmael Kgosi, a local resident, said, “We need collective efforts to address this issue and ensure safety in the community. This incident reflects the broader crime issues facing South Africa. We demand severe punishment for the accused.”

The Ahanang Banna Men’s Forum has called for a thorough investigation, with its chairman Pule Lekhoaba condemning the act and urging legislative reform.

“We urge the country to amend the South African Criminal Procedure Act. We’ve seen disturbing behavior from some men that threatens the moral fabric of our society,” Lekhoaba said. “We are calling for intensified investigations to determine whether the suspect may be a serial offender. We believe other victims may come forward.”

The case continues to draw attention as the community awaits further developments.
