Cable thief arrested for vandalising infrastructure

QWAQWA – A cable thief has been arrested in Ward 2, Mphatlalatsane, after being caught with skinned cables and a link stick, a tool used to switch off power lines for vandalism.

The suspect revealed to the police that he earns R4,000 daily by targeting water and electricity infrastructure. He is currently detained at the Makoane South African African Police Service (SAPS). According to Thabo Mofutsanyana District spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring a case was opened and the person appeared in court on Monday 21 October, 2024.

Executive mayor councillor Malekula Melato expressed gratitude for the arrest.

“We thank all involved in catching this thief, who has caused us significant problems by destroying critical infrastructure. People like him must be dealt with accordingly, and we trust our courts will send a clear message that vandalism is a serious offence,” she said.

Melato urged the community to stay vigilant and report any further vandalism incidents to the police, emphasizing the negative impact on the community caused by disruptions to water and electricity supply.
