QWAQWA– The Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court has ordered alleged ‘hammer killer’ Tshepang Mapiloko (36) to undergo three weeks of mental observation after receiving a long-awaited preliminary medical report on Monday.

The assessment follows a request by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to determine whether Mapiloko is mentally fit to stand trial and which court should hear the matter.

The state prosecutor told the court that arrangements had been made for Mapiloko to be admitted to a psychiatric facility, where he will undergo a three-week observation period.

Mapiloko was arrested in Phuthaditjhaba on 9 October 2025 after allegedly killing his uncle, Frank Letlala (75), with whom he lived.

Police reportedly found Mapiloko washing blood-stained clothes at the house while Letlala’s lifeless body lay inside. The elderly man had severe head injuries believed to have been caused by a hard and blunt object.

A hammer was allegedly found next to the body.

Mapiloko has remained in custody since his arrest after the court denied him bail, ruling that he had failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances justifying his release.

The killing shocked the community, with family members, political organisations and residents submitting a petition demanding that he be denied bail and, if convicted, receive the harshest possible sentence.

It remains unclear which court will ultimately hear the trial if Mapiloko is declared fit to stand trial.

However, the state indicated that due to the seriousness of the offence, the matter may be transferred to a higher court.

Mapiloko is expected back in court on 30 March 2026, when the full mental observation report is due to be presented.
