BLOEMFONTEIN – Rising sports star Masabata Motaung, a 17-year-old Grade 11 learner from Tsebo Secondary School in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, has earned a coveted spot in the 2026 Summer National Games, to be held in Gauteng from 11–15 December 2026.
Motaung impressed at the provincial table tennis eliminations held on Saturday, 18 October 2025, at Tempe Sports Grounds in Bloemfontein, where top young athletes from across the Free State competed fiercely for limited slots. She finished second in her category, securing one of only two available national qualifying positions per age group and gender.
Her achievement marks a significant milestone not only for her but also for her school and district, as she becomes the only learner from Tsebo Secondary School to advance to the national stage this year.
Tsebo Secondary teacher Tshepiso Senyane lauded Motaung’s dedication and drive, saying her success is a testament to the power of discipline and consistency.
“Masabata has shown great focus and passion for the sport. Her determination has finally paid off, and she continues to inspire her peers,” Senyane said.
A visibly thrilled Motaung said the competition was tough, but she remained focused on her goal. “It wasn’t easy, but I gave it my all. I’m proud to represent my school and district at the national games,” she said.
Motaung’s success has ignited pride throughout the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, with teachers and classmates celebrating her as a shining example of what commitment can achieve.
As preparations begin for the national event, Motaung’s focus now shifts to sharpening her skills ahead of the Gauteng showdown, where she will face the country’s best young players.
Her journey from a small district school to the national arena underscores the growing talent emerging from Free State schools — and the determination of a young athlete who continues to prove that dreams are achievable through hard work and passion.
Masabata Motaung’s story is one of perseverance, pride, and promise — a reminder that champions can rise from anywhere.
