QWAQWA – Raw emotion, family pride and community backing defined the crowning moment of Thabiso Radebe as Presenter of the Year at the 10th annual Qwaqwa Radio Awards.
Cheers turned to tears inside the Phuthaditjhaba Multipurpose Hall on Friday night as Radebe’s name was announced — a victory powered by loyal listeners and an unshakable family support system.
His niece, Portia Molefe (25), sprinted to the stage in celebration.
“I’m proud of my uncle. I voted for him — I knew he would win,” she said.
Close behind, his wife Tumi Radebe, flanked by their children, fought back tears.
“I pray God continues to bless and protect him,” she said.
Family members, including his brother Lefa Molefe, watched as Radebe — visibly overwhelmed — accepted the award after securing 668 votes.
“I’m speechless. The listeners did exactly what I asked — they voted. These are tears of joy,” he said.
Known for inspiring others on air, the veteran presenter admitted the moment left him without words.
“I motivate people every day, but today I have none. My duty is to serve the listeners.”
His win underscored the deep bond between the station and its audience — a relationship repeatedly highlighted throughout the night.
Station manager Tebbello Mosala reminded guests:“The station is nothing without its listeners. It has not been easy.”
She reflected on the station’s 26-year journey and a decade of hosting the awards, crediting presenters, staff and the community for its survival.
Board chairperson George Saleman, who announced the category, hailed the station’s role in nurturing local talent.
The ceremony drew political and traditional leadership, including Maluti-a-Phofung Executive Mayor Malekula Melato and Thabo Mofutsanyana District Executive Mayor Conny Msibi, alongside representatives of the Bakoena Royal Household.
But beyond the dignitaries and accolades, it was Radebe’s moment — marked by tears, family and community — that captured the heart of the night, revealing the powerful human story behind the voice on air.
