QWAQWA – A disruptive joint law enforcement operation led by the Maluti-A-Phofung local municipality was carried out on Wednesday 3 March, at Setsing Plaza and Crescent Mall, resulting in the impoundment of vehicles, confiscation of illegal gambling equipment and the verification of over 100 vendors.

Vehicles involved in piracy operations and those obstructing traffic were impounded, while vendors operating at the newly established stalls at Setsing Plaza were verified as part of efforts to ensure compliance with municipal regulations. Illegal gambling tables and chairs were also confiscated during the operation.

The multi-disciplinary operation continued with a stop-and-search at areas around the Phuthaditjhaba Police Station and Mandela Park. Motorists were screened for roadworthy compliance and searched for illicit and illegal substances.

According to Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality Communications Manager Thabo Kessah, the operation forms part of an ongoing strategy to restore order and strengthen law enforcement in high-traffic areas.

“These joint operations are meant to ensure that by-laws are enforced, businesses operate legally and communities are protected from criminal activities. We will continue working with our partners to ensure safety and compliance across the municipality,” said Kessah.

The Disruptive Joint Operation is a collaborative effort involving several stakeholders, including the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Free State Department of Health Emergency Services, Thabo Mofutsanyana Environmental Health Services, the Free State Provincial Law Enforcement Unit (Traffic Management) and the Department of Home Affairs Immigration Services, among others.

The operation resulted in the impoundment of 15 vehicles and the issuance of 23 traffic tickets. Vendor verification remains ongoing at the Setsing Plaza.

Authorities have confirmed that these operations will continue as part of intensified efforts to curb lawlessness and promote compliance with municipal and national regulations.
