QWAQWA – The Maluti-a-Phofung community has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of celebrated hair stylist and entrepreneur Sugar Charles Motloung, with an outpouring of tributes highlighting his pioneering role in the local beauty industry and his lasting influence on generations of stylists.

Motloung, from Phuthaditjhaba, was widely admired for breaking gender barriers in the hairdressing profession, an industry traditionally dominated by women.

His exceptional talent and bold creativity earned him widespread recognition, opening doors to international exposure, including opportunities to hone and showcase his skills in the United States.

Maluti-a-Phofutsanyana Municipal Council Chief Whip Moeketsi Lebesa described Motloung as a visionary whose legacy transcended business success.

“A true pioneer who broke barriers, Sugar’s legacy will resonate for years to come. His passing is a profound loss to colleagues, clients and the wider community that admired his work. He inspired many and proved that passion and talent know no boundaries,” Lebesa said.

Community members echoed these sentiments, remembering Motloung not only for his skill but for his warmth and mentorship. Lefa Ralethohlane recalled personal moments shared with the late stylist.

“I remember him when he was in good health, and we shared many laughs about the hairstyling business and our experiences. I thank God that we had the chance to honour him while he was still alive,” Ralethohlane said.

Another resident, Vicky Moloi, credited Motloung with introducing innovative hairstyling trends to QwaQwa, including the once-popular S-curl hairstyle.

“We learned the S-curl from Sugar. He introduced it here in QwaQwa, and many other styles followed. He was always ahead of his time,” Moloi said.

Motloung’s death has left a significant void in the local business and creative sector, particularly among aspiring stylists who saw in him a powerful example that success is achievable regardless of background or societal expectations.

As tributes continue to flood social media, the community has expressed deep gratitude for having had a trailblazer of Motloung’s calibre in their midst, acknowledging the indelible mark he leaves on QwaQwa’s creative, entrepreneurial and cultural landscape.
