Centralised system to speed up payment of SMMES

Small entrepreneur owners doing business with government will no longer have to wait more than 30 days to be paid for their services, thanks to a new system to be implemented on April 1 2018.

The new system is expected to be user-friendly to traders doing business with the government, including those in the rural areas, as all data will be centralised and categorised.

The owner of an internet cafe that designs the municipality newsletter, Moeketsi Mbatha, hailed the whole system as the answer to their problems as some of them are owed for services rendered many months ago, something that has crippled his business.

“I have already registered my company with the national treasury cenrtalised system. This will enable me to do business everywhere in the country and get paid without any qualms as all information pertaining to my company and service will be readily available.”

The acting director (Assets and Liabilities) of the treasury department, Tshepo Mabilo, said under the new procurement system, all state entities, departments and municipalities will centralise and categorise their services.

This will enable government to access all categories of business such as cooperatives, people living with disabilities, women and youth.

The move is also in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s directive that service providers must be paid within 30 days.

“When we fail to pay business people on time we are ruining their businesses and this leads to a collapse of the economy. Every person who has done a job for government whether at municipality, provincial or national level, must be paid within 30 days in order to encourage and enable them to continue contributing to the development of this country’s economy.”
