QWAQWA – A 26-year-old woman, Ntombizodumo Radebe, from Phuthaditjhaba, broke down in tears during her brief first appearance at the local Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 2 May.

Radebe, a student at the University of the Free State, stands accused of the murder of a 22-year-old woman.

She was arrested on Thursday, May 1, following an alleged altercation during a night party that reportedly escalated after a spillage of wine in the early hours of the morning.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Radebe intends to apply for legal aid.

Residents of the ‘Supermarket’ section in Phuthaditjhaba were shocked to discover the lifeless body of a young woman lying in the street.

According to Free State police, officers were summoned to the scene on Thursday, 1 May, where they found the victim with a fatal stab wound to the chest.

“Allegedly, the suspect went to her room, returned with a sharp object, and stabbed the victim, who died instantly at the scene,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring.

Radebe was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on Friday, 9 May, for formal bail application. The state has indicated it will oppose bail.
