FICKSBURG – Free State police have launched a manhunt and appealed for public assistance following the brutal murder and armed robbery of a foreign businessman in Katlehong, Meqheleng, on Thursday, 7 May.

The 39-year old businessman was found with gunshot wounds to the back of the head and left arm.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had just arrived from his business premises in Zone 8 to collect his brother when he was allegedly confronted by two unknown men, who engaged him in a brief altercation.

Free State police spokesperson Lt Col Thabo Covane said a gunshot was heard during the confrontation before the victim collapsed.

“The two suspects fled the scene in the victim’s white Toyota Camry,” said Covane.

The stolen vehicle was later recovered abandoned near Melspruit Dam, with its headlights still switched on.

“We are investigating cases of murder and robbery with a firearm. Although the vehicle has been recovered, the suspects remain at large. Detectives are following all possible leads as the manhunt intensifies,” he said.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident, noticed suspicious activity near Melspruit Dam, or has information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

Members of the public can contact Detective Warrant Officer Mofolo on 082 301 9578, SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit anonymous tip-offs through the MySAPSApp.
