GOLDEN GATE – The recent business pitch competition brought together young entrepreneurs from across the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, showcasing innovation, determination, and the potential of youth-led businesses. The event, supported by various stakeholders, saw participants competing for funding to grow their ventures, with judges offering constructive feedback on their presentations.
Judges share their insights
Ntsane Mopeli from the Thabo Mofutsanyana Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Centre emphasized the importance of innovation and mentorship. He noted that while many participants presented promising ideas, too many flocked into similar business concepts. “Our youth must think out of the box and come up with solutions to the challenges we face as a country,” he said. Mopeli also stressed that funding alone was not enough, ongoing mentorship and guidance would be critical for sustainable growth.
From Hollywood Bets, Ursula Matlala highlighted gaps in financial planning and presentation skills. She observed that while some participants were passionate and knowledgeable about their businesses, many struggled to clearly articulate their financial needs and growth strategies. “What stood out in the winner was passion, preparation, and a clear plan. She knew exactly what she wanted to achieve and how she would use the prize money,” said Matlala.
Representing SANParks, Paul Mpye praised those who confidently delivered comprehensive presentations within the allocated time. He emphasized the importance of confidence in selling a business idea. “The ones who stood out touched on all aspects of their business plans, marketing, funding needs, and how they would use the money,” Mpye explained.
From NYDA, Tumi Dithebe echoed the observations on confidence and preparation. He noted that nervousness affected many participants’ performance. However, he commended those who presented with clarity, confidence, and eye contact. “Those who prepared well demonstrated that they can compete on bigger stages,” Dithebe said.
Celebrating the winners
First place went to Baanetse Mokhotla from Qwaqwa, founder of African Glow Fantasies, a confectionery business, who walked away with R60 000. Other winners included Siphokazi Dlamini Blessing from Bethlehem Spa (R40 000), Bokamoso Flatha Mamasedi from Flatha Crochet in Qwaqwa (R30 000), and Jubalani Mokoena from Clarens Adventures (R20 000).
Speaking after her victory, Mokhotla expressed gratitude and determination. “I feel so honoured and blessed to have won this competition. All the preparation and training worked to my advantage. I’m going to reinvest the winnings into my business and continue to bring joy to the community with my baked goods,” she said.
The Bigger picture
The competition not only celebrated the entrepreneurial spirit of local youth but also highlighted areas for growth; from business planning to presentation skills. With funding, mentorship, and continued support, the event showcased how young entrepreneurs can play a vital role in addressing unemployment and driving innovation in the region.
