QWAQWA – Award-winning online presenter Mohau Simela, known to his listeners as Mo-Simela, says his recognition at the inaugural Community Radio Awards signifies his arrival in the radio industry and motivates him to never look back but continue striving for his dreams.

The young broadcaster, who has only three months behind the mic, scooped the award after being given the opportunity by former SABC Lesedi FM presenter Nkunyana Nkunyana, the brainchild behind Beezy FM’s management.

Full of life and energy, the young radio jockey hosts a three-hour drive-time slot.

“This award means so much to me. I do not go behind the microphone for awards, but this recognition solidifies the fact that I am on the right track. It brings hope to people like me, especially those from rural areas who don’t even believe such things could happen to them.

It also serves as a reminder that as a person, you must master the art of doing whatever it takes to bring your dreams into existence,” said Simela.

Mo-Simela says he grew up idolising radio personalities such as Metro FM’s T’bo Touch, Wilson B Nkosi, and Radio 2000 businessman and podcaster David King Mashabela.

However, he admitted that Khutso Theledi’s captivating presenting style, Mo Flava’s content and edge, and the fire of the late Vinolia Mashego “V-Mash” on Jam Alley made them his favourite media personalities.

“I am well aware that I might be listened to by someone going through mental health issues, someone broken, shy, or afraid to step out and be themselves. I run a show from that perspective because I know how it feels, and I can relate,” he said.

Working on productions for radio programmes, hosting his own show on a national broadcaster, and launching a clothing line are among the future plans of the young Mo-Simela.

During the ceremony, Motheo FM scooped the Community Radio of the Year award, Lefu Moloi from Mosupatsela FM was named Best Community Radio Current Affairs Presenter, Lekgokolo Mofokeng from Dihlabeng FM walked away with Best Community Radio Gospel Show, and CUT FM received awards for Best Daytime Show and the Special Award – Against All Odds.

The awards organiser and former Lesedi FM presenter, Motseki Mabuya, explained that the initiative is a movement close to his heart, aimed at celebrating talent and the future of radio in the country.
