QWAQWA – Mayibuye Afrika leader Floyd Shivambu says his newly formed party will work “hand in glove” with traditional and royal leaders, declaring them central to its manifesto, leadership choices and programmes.
Shivambu, a former secretary-general of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, said Mayibuye Afrika has recorded rapid growth since its launch in September 2025, with branches established nationwide in just five months.
On Wednesday, 11 February, Shivambu met the Paramount Chief of Bakoena, Morena e Moholo Moremoholo Mopeli of the Bakoena Royal House, ahead of visits to rural municipalities in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District.
He said the party had resolved that all candidates in areas under traditional authority must receive approval from local traditional leaders before standing for office.
“Traditional leaders are closest to the people and understand their daily challenges. Their guidance will shape our manifesto and leadership,” Shivambu said.
He expressed confidence that Mayibuye Afrika would contest all wards nationally in the 2026 local government elections, positioning the party as a vehicle for what he called “true democracy for all South Africans”.
Morena Mopeli welcomed the party’s formation and Shivambu’s visit, saying new political movements offer communities more choices at the ballot box.
However, he cautioned leaders in power against undermining traditional institutions and urged politicians not to take citizens for granted.
