BETHLEHEM – A coordinated operation by the Bethlehem Public Order Police and SARS Customs from Ladybrand has led to seven arrests and the confiscation of illicit goods worth R450,000 in Ladybrand and Senekal.
The joint crackdown targeted businesses suspected of trading in counterfeit products and illicit cigarettes. Officers removed illegal goods from shelves in several identified shops during the intelligence-driven operation, which forms part of a broader campaign against economic crimes in the region.
Thabo Mofutsanyana District SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, said the operation reflects an ongoing effort to disrupt illicit trade.
“The aim of this continuous, intelligently driven joint operation is to address the proliferation of illicit cigarettes and counterfeit goods sold by various businesses,” Mophiring said.
“Teams have been moving around Bethlehem, Ladybrand, and Senekal – areas flagged through security intelligence.”
Police confirmed that since the beginning of the campaign, millions of rands’ worth of goods, including thousands of illegal cigarettes and skin-lightening products, have been seized.
Authorities emphasized that such activities not only harm legitimate businesses but also pose health and safety risks to consumers. The crackdown is intended to dismantle illegal networks and deter the sale of hazardous counterfeit goods.
The seven suspects, all foreign nationals, are expected to appear in court soon. Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are anticipated as police and customs officials continue their targeted operations across the Free State.
The SAPS and SARS have reiterated their commitment to intensifying pressure on illegal trade, urging the public to report suspicious activities that undermine the local economy.
