Pair jailed for cable theft

QWAQWA – Two men Johannes Phepeng (46, and Hartlife Mharadzi (36), have been sentenced to pay a fine of R30 000 or five years’ imprisonment.
This after they were found guilty of stealing cable worth R150 000 by the Sasolburg Regional court on December 01, 2022.


According to Free State Hawks spokesperson Chirstopher Sinqo, Phepeng and Mharadza’s convictions stemmed from an incident that occurred on Christmas Day 2021. Police from the K9 unit in Sasolburg were conducting a routine patrol when they noticed a suspicious white Hyundai H100 with registration number JL 90CMGP with three occupants.


“Police stopped the vehicle and during the search they discovered Transnet cable to the value of R150 000.The suspects were arrested and the case was handed over to the Hawks‘ serious organized crime investigations team based in Sasolburg for further investigation.”
