FREE STATE – After 36 years of unwavering service in the South African Police Service (SAPS), Brigadier Motansi Makhele officially hung up his boots on Monday, 30 September, marking the end of a distinguished policing career.

Makhele, who rose to become the provincial head of Corporate Communication, spent the last 20 years as the trusted spokesperson for the Free State police. A seasoned communicator and respected leader, he became the steady voice of SAPS through times of crisis and celebration, serving under multiple provincial commissioners with discipline, loyalty and integrity.

Born and raised in Dewetsdorp, Makhele was described by colleagues as a pillar of strength within the organisation. His leadership and professionalism guided the province’s communication efforts, ensuring that communities remained informed and connected to police work.

In an emotional farewell speech, Makhele expressed deep gratitude to SAPS and the Free State community for the trust placed in him.

“It has been an honour to be the voice of the Free State police. I thank the organisation and the public for walking this journey with me,” he said.Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane, paid tribute to Makhele’s legacy.

“His departure leaves a void, but his legacy of commitment, discipline and compassion will remain. We wish him the very best in his new chapter,” she said.

Makhele’s eloquence and integrity earned him widespread respect from colleagues, journalists, and the public alike. As he steps into retirement, he leaves behind a lasting legacy of service and excellence.
