QWAQWA – Thebe ya Kgomo Primary School in Monontsha hosted a literacy fun walk to Witsies Cave on 17 October, using storytelling, poetry, and reading games to encourage a culture of reading among learners and parents alike.

The fun walk, led by the school’s drum majorettes, saw participation from Grade RR to Grade 7 learners, teachers, and community members. The event combined physical activity with creative literacy exercises designed to make reading enjoyable and meaningful for children.

Grade 4 learner Mpho Lekgonyana expressed excitement about the day, saying he learned a valuable lesson from one of the stories read during the walk.

“The fun walk was fun and I learned through one of the stories that it is important to share with others,” he said.

Foundation Phase Departmental Head, Palesa Komane, explained that the initiative was part of the school’s broader literacy campaign aimed at strengthening community involvement in education.

“We are gathered here today for a literacy walk to raise awareness in Monontsha about the importance of reading. We want parents to take part in their children’s learning journey and see what we do in school through reading, speeches, and poetry – in both English and Sesotho,” she said.

Grade 1 teacher, Mamokete Chenene, highlighted the different approaches used to build reading comprehension across age groups.

“Our learners must learn to read with understanding. The younger ones read through pictures, while by Grade 4 learners should read without relying on images,” she explained.

Principal Lebina Mateane commended both teachers and parents for their commitment to promoting literacy.

“Literacy is very important because it allows people to access information and make informed decisions about their lives. I’m proud of our staff and the Monontsha community for their support. A good school can rise to excellence because of the support of our learners’ parents,” he said.

Thebe ya Kgomo Primary continues to shine as a school dedicated to nurturing well-rounded learners who value reading, learning, and community involvement. Through initiatives like the literacy fun walk, the school strengthens its role as a beacon of education and unity in Monontsha.
