BLOEMFONTEIN – In a landmark moment for gender equality and academic transformation, the University of the Free State (UFS) has appointed Professor Hester Klopper as its first female Vice-Chancellor and Principal in its 121-year history.
The historic announcement has resonated across the university and beyond, marking a significant shift toward inclusivity and progressive leadership in higher education.
In an exclusive interview with The Guard, Dr. Moipone Malimabe, a lecturer in Physical Chemistry and Applied Polymer Science at UFS, described the appointment as more than symbolic, calling it “a galaxy of hope” for women in academia and leadership.
“Arise and shine, for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you, woman phenomenal,” she said, quoting Isaiah 60:1 – a verse that deeply moved her during Prof. Klopper’s inauguration.
Dr. Malimabe emphasized that Prof. Klopper’s appointment represents a critical turning point for UFS, challenging the institution’s traditionally male-dominated leadership structure.
“This moment brings joy and anticipation of greatness,” she said. “Recognizing women’s contributions in leadership doesn’t just boost confidence – it fosters excellence and creates space for equal opportunities.”
She stressed the importance of shifting focus from outdated gender norms to competence and willingness to serve. “Historically, women were relegated to domestic roles, their broader contributions often overlooked. This appointment signals a new era where leadership is defined by performance, not gender,” she said.
Dr. Malimabe believes Prof. Klopper’s leadership can pave the way for more women to rise in academic and professional spaces. “She is a star shining bright – placed at the right time – a beacon for others to follow.”
Prof. Klopper brings over 30 years of academic and leadership experience to her new role. Formerly the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Stellenbosch University, she holds eight postgraduate qualifications, including an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University. She is a fellow of the Academy of Science of South Africa, the American Academy of Nursing, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.
Her installation ceremony drew dignitaries from across the nation, including deputy ministers, the Premier of the Free State, members of parliament, MECs, and traditional leaders. Messages of congratulations poured in from the Executive Committee, Senate, alumni, staff, and the Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC), all celebrating the university’s commitment to transformation.
Dorah Klaas, UFS Development Manager and part-time lecturer, called the appointment a breakthrough.
“UFS broke its own record of gender bias,” she said. “This shows the university is serious about equality – it’s no longer about gender, but about ability.”
Prof. Klopper’s vision for UFS focuses on collaboration, academic excellence, and global engagement. Her leadership is not just a personal achievement, but a clarion call to institutions across South Africa and beyond to embrace diversity, fairness, and innovation.
As Dr. Malimabe noted, it is “a chance for more women leaders to evolve” – and a powerful symbol of what is possible when institutions lead with purpose and equality
