QWAQWA – Free State matric class of 2023 top achiever Kamohelo Neo Mosikili of Selelekela Senior Secondary in Maluti-a-Phofung local municipality has attributed his success to determination, hard work, and discipline.
Mosikili, an aspiring software engineer, said this in interview at a congratulatory function that was hosted by the Free State government, where top 100 learners were honoured.
“It is simply hard work, consistency discipline; that means making those small decisions and sticking to them. When you say you are going to study, you should do it.”
Outlining the reason behind his choice of career, Mosikili said: “I plan to study software engineering so that I can help solve some of our problems. This is a field where you get to create solutions.”
Mosikili is going to study at Wits University, full funded by the government of the Free State.
He scored 100 percent in four subjects, physics science, mathematics, Life Orientation and geography.
Mosikili is not the only who has raised Maluti-a-Phofung flag high; in total the rural municipality produced an overall pass rate of 91.4 percent with a 49.5 bachelor’s pass rate.
In terms of district performance, the Free State has three of its districts in the top three; Motheo is second best in the entire country. The others are Fezile Dabi and Thabo Mofutsanyana districts.
The class 2023 matric results were announced by Basic education minister Angie Motshekga on Wednesday January 18,2024.
Free State province scored an astounding 89.03 percent pass rate, while overall pass rate is 82.0percent. It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal 86.4 percent and Gauteng 85.4 percent in third.
Other provinces are North west at position four with 86.6 percent, Western Cape achieved 81.5percent. On the fifth 5th position is the second, best improved province, sixth is the Eastern Cape, with an achievement of 81.4percent, the best improved province is Limpopo, with an achievement of 79.5 percent , Mpumalanga achieved at 77.0 percent, and Northern Cape achieved at 75.8 percent.

“Facts show that the class of 2023 is the tenth cohort exposed to the CAPS-based National Senior Certificate examinations. The age profile of candidates enrolling for the NSC exams, has been improving over the years. Most poignantly, in 2023, 88.2 percent of the full-time candidates, and 47.8 percent of the part-time candidates were 16-20 years of age when they enrolled for the 2023 NSC examinations,” Motshekga said.
According to Motshekga of the total number of eight hundred and ninety-seven thousand, seven hundred and seventy-five (897 775) total number of candidates, who registered for the 2023 NSC exams, as indicated earlier, seven hundred and fifteen thousand, seven hundred and nineteen (715 719) were full-time candidates; while one hundred and eighty-two thousand, and fifty-six (182 056) were part-time candidates.
