QWAQWA – Mothers who gave birth on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day have been encouraged to breastfeed their babies because it provides numerous benefits for both mothers and babies.

Breastfeeding is a natural and beneficial way for a mother to nourish and bond with her baby, according to health experts.
The executive mayor of Maluti-A-Phofung local municipality Masetjhaba Lakaje-Mosia encouraged mothers who delivered their babies during Christmas and New Year’s Day to breastfeed them.

“It is very important that you follow breastfeeding guidelines provided by these dedicated nurses as we know it provides the necessary nutrients at the early stage of babies’ development.”

A total of 10 babies were delivered on the first day of January 2024. Seven of them which included a set of twins were delivered at Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli regional hospital, three at Elizabeth Ross hospital while only one baby was delivered at Bolata clinic.

MMC Bridget Lebesa who accompanied the executive mayor on her visit to the hospitals, heaped praised on the nurses for their dedication and hard work.

“We are aware it’s not an easy task that you are doing, but your dedication is noted like we did on Christmas day,” Lebesa said.
A total of 18 babies was born across the Free State Province on January 1, 2024 – 12 girls and six boys.
Meanwhile, on her visit to Bongani Tertiary Hospital in Welkom, Free State health MEC Mathabo Leeto also emphasized the importance of breastfeeding.

Handing over gifts to babies born on January 1st, MAP local municipality executive mayor Masetjhaba Lakaje-Mosia and MMC Bridget Lebesa.

“New mothers across the province are encouraged to breastfeed their babies exclusively, at least for first six months of their lives. Breast milk continues to be an important source of nutrients for children even after six months, therefore is no need to put a time limit on feeding.

“Where breastfeeding is not practical, mothers are encouraged to express the breast milk and feed by bottle, because breast milk has major health benefits such as strengthening the baby’s immune system. It also creates a strong bond between mother and baby.”
