Best performing schools rewarded

QWAQWA– Three secondary schools in QwaQwa received a cheque for R100,000 each for being among top 10 best performing schools in mathematics.
The schools are The Beacon in Mabolela village, Rantsane in Makwane and Lekgulo in Matebeleng.

The move is in line with government’s National Development Plan target to increase the number of pupils taking mathematics in schools in the province.
The Beacon Secondary’s principal, Ramodiehi Mohaladi said even though they had wished for a 100% pass rate, they are quite happy with the overall performance of the matric class of 2022.

“It is unfortunate that one learner was left behind. But we are satisfied with their performance because if you take a closer look, our pupils’ average pass mark 60% and that is an achievement,” said Mohaladi.

According to Education MEC Tate Makgoe, mathematics participation saw an improvement in the last matric results. The enrolment in the subject gradually increased from 9 722 in 2018 to 9 886 in 2019, 11 224 in 2020, 12 744 in 2021 and 13 683 in 2022.

“Since 2012 we have undertaken to increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass Mathematics and Physics. The top Maths and Science school in the province is C EN N H Meisieskool Oranje,” said Makgoe.

The province’s districts have managed to achieve more than an 85% pass rate in the matric class of 2022. Motheo District came out tops with 90.08% pass rate and received attained 49.5% bachelor passes. It is followed by Fezile Dabi. Xhariep and Thabo Mofutsanyana are in position six and seven respectively.

Motheo District Director, December Moloi, had this to say: “we are very happy, we also thank all the teachers’ unions for standing by our side in difficult times. I must also emphasise that we were inspired by Thabo Mofutsanyana district, as most of the training and skills we got it from them,” said Moloi who originally hails from Bluegumbosch.
